The game has come a long way since it surpassed its Kickstarter goal three years ago, securing just over half a million dollars in funding. Back In The Groove is poised to expand on the unapologetically strange and delightfully funky platform that its predecessors have created. The first game of the series was a 1991 cult hit for the Sega Genesis, and it helped pioneer ideas like procedural world generation, which have become much more commonplace in modern game design.
Gamers can take a look at the new ToeJam and Earl cinematic trailer below:
It was almost a year ago that ToeJam and Earl creator Greg Johnson confirmed that the game would be making its way to the Nintendo Switch, a decision that undoubtedly increased the development time of the series. In a recent Kickstarter update, Johnson took it upon himself to explain the delay of the game:
Gamers hungry to dip their toes into the nostalgic franchise can still pick up some of the earlier titles on Steam, but those waiting for Back In The Groove will need to welcome the new year before the game goes gold. Johnson couldn’t narrow down exactly when in 2018 the game will release, so gamers could feasibly be in for another 12 months of waiting.
ToeJam and Earl is now expected to release in 2018 for PC, PS4, Linux, Mac, Switch, and Xbox One.
