The game challenges users to guess a five-letter word in six tries or less, with only a color-coded system to help them: green when the letter is in the right place, yellow when it’s not, and grey when it isn’t in the word at all.
Sometimes, though, a more definitive clue is required for the answer to become apparent, especially when there are multiple options for the word of the day, so Newsweek has put together some hints (and the answer) below.
Wordle was originally created by software engineer Josh Wardle who made it available to the public in October 2021 after first playing it alongside his partner.
Once public, the game became a global hit and reached a peak of over 45 million users a day after originally starting out with just 90 active players, and it is now so popular it even inspired a number of other daily puzzles such as globe-trotting game Worldle and the math-based Nerdle.
In January 2022, Wardle sold the game to The New York Times Company for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, and the puzzle moved over to the publication’s platform in February.

Hint #3: Synonyms for today’s Wordle include a “band,” a “team,” or a “brigade” if referring to a military unit. Hint #4: Wordle #296 is best used to describe what a group will call themselves, such as a team of cheerleaders. Hint #5: Merriam-Webster defines today’s Wordle as “a small group engaged in a common effort or occupation. "
