Wardle, originally from the U.K., first came up with the game to keep his partner entertained during coronavirus lockdown.
After being released to the public, Wordle became a social media phenomenon, and quickly developed a dedicated fan base.
Part of the game’s beauty is its simplicity. Each day players are tasked with deducing a new five letter word, in six guesses or less. After each attempt the letters light up, letting the player know how accurate they were. If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter features in the world, but has been put in the wrong place, whilst gray means it isn’t included at all.
In January, Wardle sold Wordle to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure fee.
Earlier that month, Wardle spoke to Newsweek, admitting he sometimes struggles to complete his own game.
He said: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.
“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”
Since Wordle’s success, a number of similar online puzzles, including Worldle and Dordle, have been developed.
