Part of the game’s beauty is its simplicity, with no experience required to play. Each day the player must work out a different five-letter word, in six attempts or less.

After each guess the letters light up, telling the player how accurate they were. If a letter turns green it is both, in the word and in the correct place. Yellow means the letter is in the word, but not in the right position, while gray indicates it’s not included at all.

Speaking to Newsweek in January 2022, Wardle, from the U.K., revealed he initially designed the game as something “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

Counterintuitively, he said it can be “just as important” to learn which letters aren’t in the word as the ones that are.

Wardle explained: “One thing I will say is that a lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that.

“Even when you have most of the letters, it’s still worth using a couple of tires to just narrow down the options further. It’s often just as important to learn what letters aren’t in a word. That information can actually be more powerful in a lot of ways, and you don’t necessarily realize it at first.”

Wordle is currently owned by the New York Times, which purchased the game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Its popularity has helped inspire a number of other online games, including Worldle and Nerdle.
