The game was invented by Josh Wardle, a New York based software developer, as a play on his name.

Every day a new Wordle puzzle is released, with the player tasked with guessing a five-letter word in six guesses or less. After each guess the letters light up, indicating how accurate you were. If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter is correct, but not in the right place, whilst gray means it is not in the word at all.

Wardle, originally from the U.K., told Newsweek his original aim was simply to make a game “for me and my partner to enjoy.”

Despite inventing the puzzle, Wardle admitted he sometimes struggles with the brainteasers himself. He said: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wordle was sold to the New York Times in January for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

The game has helped inspire a number of other online puzzles, including Quordle, Worldle, Dordle and the math-focused Nerdle.

The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
