If you’ve never tried the puzzle before, you can do so for free here.

The premise of the game is pretty straightforward: you have to guess a five-letter word in six tries or fewer. It is color-coded, so when a letter is in the right position it will turn green. Any letters that are in the word but have been placed in the wrong position will turn yellow. Letters that aren’t in the word at all will turn gray.

The online puzzle was first created by Wardle in 2013. He returned to it and finished it during the COVID-19 lockdown with help from his partner Palak Shah.

Currently, over tens of millions of people play it everyday, but when it was first launched, only a few dozen people played it.
