Even if you are a hardcore math whiz, these puzzles can still be challenging. After all, it’s not just about solving problems that are provided to you like they are in an exam. Instead, you have to go the extra mile by figuring out what the question even is in the first place. Only then can you proceed to answer it.
In case you are not familiar with this game (which was inspired by Wordle), it requires you to devise an eight-character sum using the basic functions of a calculator. This means that — rather than guessing letters from the English alphabet as you do in most other Wordle offshoots — you’ll be trialling different combinations of numerical digits and arithmetic signs (like plus, minus, divide, multiply and equals).
The part that makes it so difficult is that these characters can repeat several times in any given answer. For example, the puzzle could involve two separate instances of subtraction, or the number 2 might appear more than once.
Nerdle does have a color-coded hint system (again, similar to Wordle) that lets you know if a character you have entered is in the equation at all and if you’ve put it in the right place. Even with this help, you can hit a dead end if you’re not lucky with your guesses.

Nerdle #36 Tips and Clues for February 24
We will publish the answer to Nerdle #36 at the very end of this article. First, here are some tips that will help you solve the puzzle on your own.
Hint #1: The Nerdle puzzle for February 24 only contains one arithmetic sign (other than equals). The character in question is the third tile in the sum. Hint #2: The equals sign is the sixth tile in today’s equation. By the process of elimination, this means that every number featured here comprises double digits. Hint #3: In total, you will need to use four different numerical digits, as there is some repetition among them as well. Hint #4: If you haven’t worked it out yet, the equation for today is a subtraction sum. Hint #5: The numbers you need to use are “2”, “4”, “5” and “9”. They are not necessarily in that order and a couple of them are repeated.
