The bats, on the other hand, is where things get a little sketchy. The chalk options will be the Diamondbacks and Rockies in their game at Coors Field. Both teams have implied run totals over 5.5 runs, but their players also will cost you a pretty penny to stack and likely prevent you from rostering one of the elite arms. The Red Sox are also in a great spot tonight in a home matchup against Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ, who has been lit up in his past two starts against the Tigers and Yankees. The lack of excellent hitting options opens up plenty of value batters that we can target in both cash games and GPPs to help us get one or two elite arms in our lineups.

MLB DFS Picks: FanDuel, DraftKings values for Thursday, July 12
Ross Stripling, RHP, Dodgers @ Padres (DK: $9,100, FD: $9,200)
With all of the elite arms on the slate tonight, Stripling might fly under the radar despite a prime matchup with the Padres. Stripling has been excellent since sliding into the starting rotation this season and is an elite pivot off of some of the bigger name pitchers. He has posted a plus-minus of plus-7.1 in his 11 starts this season and has double-digit strikeout upside against a Padres team that has the highest recent strikeout rate on the slate at 10 K/9 over their past 10 games.
Jake Bauers, 1B, Rays @ Twins (DK: $3,900, FD: $3,200)
The Rays are in an interesting spot tonight in a matchup with Twins righty Kyle Gibson. While Gibson is certainly viable as an SP2, the Rays bats are cheap enough to help you get in your choice of top-end pitchers. Bauers has preformed well against righthanded pitching this season and offers great savings at first base over some of the more expensive options. Gibson has struggled with lefthanded batters, allowing a .344 wOBA against lefties over his past four starts.
Andrew Toles, OF, Dodgers @ Padres (DK: $3,700, FD: $2,000)
Toles recently got called back up to the big league squad and is slated to get starts whenever the Dodgers face righthanded starting pitchers. Tonight, they get a matchup with Padres righty Tyson Ross, and Toles is an excellent value play, especially on FanDuel where he is the stone-cold minimum price of $2,000. Toles has been a righty masher at all levels of pro baseball and carries a .432 wOBA against RHP over his past 50 at-bats, which matches up well with Ross, who has allowed a .371 wOBA to lefties over his past four starts.
David Freese, 1B/3B, Pirates vs. Brewers (DK: $3,200, FD: $2,500)
Freese is by no mean a sexy guy to roster, but his price tag and matchup are both good enough to garner attention tonight. The Pirates have one of the top matchups on the slate against lefty Wade Miley, who, with all due respect, is completely washed-up at this stage of his career. Miley has been lit up by righthanded batters over the past few years and will be making his first start since May. Freese’s multi-position eligibility on DraftKings is also a bonus, as we will really need his price savings to help fit in a stud arm.

Beyond Cole, the starting pitcher quality falls off a cliff with Cole Hamels and Mike Leake being the only two other established pitchers on the slate. The Red Sox have also called up talented youngster Jalen Beeks, who may also end up being a very chalky option for an SP2 on DraftKings, but more on him later.
The batting situation is a little more clear with three teams currently having implied team totals of 4.9 runs or higher. While there isn’t a ton of value for batters, the salary cap isn’t very restrictive tonight with you being virtually forced to punt on a cheap pitcher for your SP2. Of the top team stacks, the Astros will be playing in the best hitting environment at Globe Life Park. Temperatures will be in high 90s and we have seen balls flying out of the park there over the Rangers past few games. The Red Sox have the highest implied team total of the night and are due for some positive regression against lefthanded pitching (currently 29th in team wOBA against LHP). Their matchup with lefty Mathew Boyd is much better than the Astros matchup with Cole Hammels, and the Tigers bullpen is one of the worst units in the league.

MLB DFS Picks: FanDuel, DraftKings values for Thursday, June 7
Jalen Beeks, LHP, Red Sox vs. Tigers (DK: $5,700, FD: $6,500)
The Red Sox have called up talented young pitcher Jalen Beeks for a spot start tonight, and while it’s always risky taking a pitcher in their first start, Beeks has shown enough talent and strikeout upside in Triple-A to garner serious attention. He has racked up an incredible 80 strikeouts in only 56.1 innings of work in Triple-A. While it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to fully translate that minor league success to the majors, the strikeout upside alone puts him in play as an SP2 on DraftKings or a pivot off of Gerrit Cole in tournaments on FanDuel if you are feeling frisky.
Justin Smoak, 1B, Blue Jays vs. Orioles (DK: $4,300, FD: $3,400)
The Blue Jays won’t get the same attention as the Red Sox or Astros lineups will get tonight, but they are in an equally good spot in a matchup at home against Orioles righty David Hess. Smoak has crushed righthanded pitching this season, posting a .471 wOBA against righties over his past 50 at-bats. This matches up well against Hess, who has struggles against lefties thus far this year, allowing a .386 wOBA.
Nelson Cruz, OF, Mariners @ Rays (DK: $4,100, FD: $3,700)
We always think of Cruz as a lefty masher – and make no mistake, he certainly is – however, this season he has actually performed better against righthanded pitching and could see both righties and lefties s today with the Rays opting to go with a “bullpen day”. The Mariners lineup is a nice contrarian option, as we have seen the Rays bullpen get touched up on a few occasions over the past few weeks, and Seattle’s low implied team total of 4.0 runs will certainly keep the masses away.
Christian Vazquez, C, Red Sox vs. Tigers (DK: $2,700, FD: $2,100)
I’ve brought up the Red Sox a few times now, and while the top of the order doesn’t provide us much value, some of the bottom of the lineup guys not only offer great value but also nice upside. I typically like to punt at catcher, and tonight is no different with Vazquez the preferred option. Vazquez has be great against lefthanded pitching, posting a plus-minus of plus-2.3 fantasy points against lefthanded starters since the start of last season.

The highest projected run total of the night belongs to the Red Sox at 5.0 runs in a solid matchup with Orioles righty Kevin Gausman. The Rangers, Blue Jays, and Athletics are also solid teams to target with run totals all currently sitting at 4.6 runs or higher.
Reminder, there’s plenty of strategy that goes into putting together a winning DFS lineup, and the best place to start is RotoQL’s DFS tools. MLB DFS Picks: FanDuel, DraftKings values for Thursday, May 17
Mike Soroka, RHP, Braves vs. Cubs (DK: $6,700, FD: $7,600)
The pitching options tonight are brutal, and it’s looking like spending down on some high-upside guys and then spending up on the bats may be the way to go. Soroka certainly falls into that category despite a difficult matchup with the Cubs. Soroka is one of the best young arms in baseball and has flashed great strikeout upside through his first few starts in the big leagues. The Cubs have also been striking out at a decent clip over the past 10 games (8.7 K/9). The Braves have yet to push Soroka past 90 pitches, but they could opt to extend him up to 100 in his fourth start as long as he is pitching well.
Nicholas Castellanos, OF, Tigers @ Mariners (DK: $4,100, FD: $3,600)
Castellanos returned to the Tigers lineup yesterday and is in a great spot tonight against lefty Marco Gonzales. Castellanos has killed lefthanded pitching this season, posting a plus-minus of plus-5.6 fantasy points against them. The Tigers are one of the sneakiest stacks of the night and shouldn’t garner much, if any, ownership given their low projected run total of 3.6 runs. However, they will likely throw nine righthanded bats at Gonzales, who is one of the worst pitchers on the slate.
Matt Olson, 1B, Athletics @ Blue Jays (DK: $3,600, FD: $2,900)
The A’s will likely be one of the most popular stacks of the night, and Olson makes for an excellent one-off play if you are looking for home run upside. Olson and the A’s get one of the best matchups of the night against Blue Jays righty Aaron Sanchez. Olson has mashed righthanded pitching this season, posting a .350 wOBA over his past 50 at-bats. This matches up perfectly against a pitcher like Sanchez, who has struggled with lefthanded bats this year, allowing a .360 wOBA to them.
Jurickson Profar, SS, Rangers @ White Sox (DK, $3,300, FD: $2,700)
Our old buddy James Shields is taking the mound tonight, which means that the Rangers instantly shoot to the top of the team stack power rankings. All of the lefties are in play here, but in terms of pure value, it’s hard to pass up on Profar for $3,300 on DraftKings and only $2,700 on FanDuel. He gets a nice platoon advantage against a righthanded pitcher, as he is significantly better batting from the left side of the plate. He has met or exceeded value in 55 percent of his starts against righthanded starters this season and is projected to bat third, which should guarantee him four or five at-bats, making him especially attractive in cash games if you want to spend down at shortstop.
